The news this week is all about building community. I love Substack because it gives me a chance to read what other writers are putting out and see how they go about about finding readers. If you’ve been following along at all, you know I’ve becomed obsessed with microfiction. There’s a huge community in this niche alone.
As it turns out, this ultra-short form is helping me put together vingettes for bigger personal stories. There’s a section on the Feed Your Head Substack called Confessions. I’m posting some of these new micro-pieces there, because they’re more like tiny memoirs than fiction. Micro-confessions is a good name, or micro-memoirs. What do you think? Tiny Tales? At any rate, if I refer to any of the writing, fiction or non-fiction as micro, that means it’s 100 words or less. The microfiction below is a mini character profile of a woman who has dementia. I wrote it from the prompt: Old— posted by The Fiction Dealer.
Here’s a Substack I found that publishes lists of fiction writers. My goal is to get included on as many of these lists as possible.
One of the things I love about the Substack fiction community is the opportunity to participate in creative challenges that take you out of your comfort zone, like these:
If you’re into memoirs and memoir writing, check out Memoir Land.
Most creative people I know do more than one thing. I can’t tell you how many writers I know who also paint or draw and vice versa. The DrawTogether community is full of inspiration, regardless of where you put your creative energy.
If you enjoy interviews, Written Ward talks to some of the most dedicated writers in the Substack fiction community.
Finally, If you’re wondering where Wednesday’s writing prompts went, check out the chat thread beginning, Wednesday 9/18. Free and paid subscribers are invited!
